Cirque du Soleil is a Quebec-based artistic entertainment company specializing in contemporary circus.
Founded by two former street performers from Baie-Saint-Paul (a village nestled on the banks of the St. Lawrence River near Quebec City), Guy Laliberté and his troupe were known to the public as Les Echassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul.
In 1984, this troupe of jugglers, dancers, fire-eaters and musicians decided to launch its tour across the province of Quebec.
Playing with costumes, sets created from scratch and creative artists, Cirque du Soleil is determined to give its spectators a real experience without including animals on stage.
Cirque du Soleil's current team includes 1,300 artists from some 50 countries.
