Two years after Splitgate's explosion in popularity, 1047 Games has unveiled this ambitious sequel, which aims to propel the franchise into the AAA games category, capable of rivaling the biggest in the business. The first opus, launched in 2019 on PC with moderate success, really took off in 2021 with the release of the beta version on PlayStation and Xbox. With a peak of 2 million daily active users and around 22 million downloads in total, Splitgate has established itself as a staple of the multiplayer shooter landscape.
"We had to recruit a team of experienced developers to enhance our capabilities," explains Hilary Goldstein, one of the project managers. "I'm fortunate to work with people who have contributed to some of my favorite games, including veterans from Riot Games, 343 Industries and Activision Blizzard. This talent was necessary to ensure that Splitgate 2 wasn't just an improvement on the first, but a full-fledged sequel."
To accompany the announcement, a cinematic teaser has been released, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the new gameplay features. Industry experts agree that Splitgate 2 could seriously compete with giants like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Call of Duty. Its release, scheduled for 2025, is expected on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Like its predecessor, the game will be completely free on all platforms.
1047 Games has established itself as an innovative player in the video game industry, with a mission to become a pioneer in the development of original licenses. Their latest round of financing, closing in September 2021, raised $100 million, proving investors' confidence in their long-term vision. With Splitgate 2, the studio looks well placed to become a true industry heavyweight.
