Featured in Vintage Altaroc Odyssey 2021, Chess.com, the leading online chess site, has been named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential companies in the world.
Chess.com, founded in 2005 by university friends Erik Allebest and Jay Severson, ranks alongside Nvidia, Patagonia, Canva and SpaceX.
"Over the past 17 years, we have focused on our mission to serve and develop the chess community. It is a great honor and humbling to receive this recognition. Chess has the power to influence and improve lives, and I'm incredibly pleased to see this recognized by TIME ," said Erik Allebest, co-founder of the company.
This year, Chess.com and chess in general have enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity, catapulting the king of games to the top of the app charts.
On several occasions, Chess.com has reached the top spot on Google Play and in the iOS app store in the USA. In May, Chess.com membership exceeded 140 million worldwide, representing a 355% increase since January 2020, with 150,000 new users registered every day. The site also counted over 57 million monthly active users playing 840 million games during the month, an increase of 550% since January 2020. Chess.com ranks 114th among the most visited websites.
The site even had some embarrassing outages earlier this year, as Chess.com's servers struggled to adapt.
